Finding the Light Within: Diwali and Children's Mental Health
And An Invitation To See The Light In All Of Us
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a beautiful celebration observed by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains around the world. It's a time for fireworks, feasts, and family gatherings, but at its heart, Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
This year, as we light the diyas and celebrate the victory of light, let's also take a moment to reflect on the inner light within each of us, especially the children in our lives. Children, with their boundless energy and curiosity, can sometimes be challenging. They may act out, have tantrums, or withdraw into themselves. It's easy to get caught up in the frustration of these moments, but what if we looked deeper?
Just as Diwali reminds us to seek out and celebrate the light, we must also remember to look for the inner light within every child, even when they're at their most challenging. Their behaviour is often a reflection of their inner struggles, their fears, and their anxieties.
Here are some ways we can nurture the inner light in children:
Active Listening: Truly listen to their concerns, validating their feelings without judgment.
Empathy and Compassion: Try to see the world from their perspective and understand the root of their behaviour.
Positive Reinforcement: Focus on their strengths and celebrate their achievements, however small.
Creating a Safe Space: Provide a nurturing environment where they feel safe to express themselves without fear.
Mindfulness and Gratitude: Encourage practices that promote self-awareness and appreciation for the good in their lives.
And in summary?
Remember, every child is unique and shines in their own way. Sometimes, they just need a little help to let their light shine through. This Diwali, let's pledge to be more mindful of the mental health of our children. Let's be a source of light and support, guiding them through their challenges and helping them find the strength and resilience within.

Final thoughts
It can be easy to forget that children are wonderful in many ways, and special, especially when they present to us in ways we find extremely challenging and that test us in a great many ways. Try to remember why and what makes them special.
